We've got it!

The Organising Committee wants to say once more that it is most grateful for all the support and good wishes that it has received from so many people. Our country has won yet another first in the field of athletics and this will encourage all Kenyans to attempt yet higher peaks of achievement both on and off the field. The sentiments of those who have been intimately involved in gaining this success are expressed below.

Quotes from Moscow:

Hon. Ochilo Ayacko, EGH MP,
Minister for Culture, Sports, Gender and Social Services.
Head of the Kenya Bid Delegation:

"This is a good thing for Kenyan sports and we owe it to our world-beating athletes and good presentation by the bid committee which captured what Kenya has to offer well".

Taib Ali Taib,
His Worship the Mayor of Mombasa - the host city:

" It is a plus for Mombasa. The big job starts now. We have to show the rest of the world that we are also good at organising world-class events...immediately we come back work will start..."

Paul Tergat,
Bid Ambassador:

"It will be a message to the world that Kenya is also capable of hosting major sporting events. We have been competing in many cities and it is only fair that we compete on home soil".

Catherine Ndereba,
Bid Ambassador:

"It is my call to all Kenyans to support the bid team and the organising committee. They should do everything possible to ensure that the championship is a success".

Welcome to the official website of Kenya's bid to host the 2007 IAAF World Cross Country Championships!

In March 2007, the 35th IAAF World Cross Country Championships will be held in either Spain, Florida or Kenya. Which of these countries will get the honour depends on how the IAAF delegates vote when they meet in Moscow on 12 November 2005.

For years Kenyan athletes and officials have enjoyed the hospitality of those many other members of the IAAF who have hosted the World Cross Country Championships. We believe it is now time to repay that hospitality by hosting the Championships here in Kenya. We ask for the support of every National Athletic Federation to make this a reality.

The merit of our bid lies not in the financial wealth of our nation, but in the passion of our athletes and the desire of the Kenyan people to welcome athletes, officials and guests alike. We believe that the immense contribution our athletes have made to the success of the Championships elsewhere has earned Kenya the honour of hosting the Championships.

Mombasa has a rich cultural heritage and a world renowned tourist infrastructure that offers some of the finest seaside hotels and resorts to be found anywhere in the world. The course is planned for a most beautiful cliff-top setting on the green undulating terrain of the Mombasa Golf Club, above the warm turquoise water of the Indian Ocean. It is the ideal location.

Why Kenya?

Kenya is rich. It is rich in its land and scenery, its wildlife and agriculture, its variety and, most especially, its friendly people. It is the land that defined the word ‘Safari’. It is well known as the place to go to watch herds of animals found nowhere else and see an unmatched selection of birds. The grandeur of the Rift Valley is breathtaking with flocks of flamingoes in its lakes making their waters look pink. The inland Jade Sea is home to fossilised monsters. The coast is miles of white-sand beaches, sunlit islands and coral reefs alive with multicoloured fish. In the towns tropical fruits make market stalls a beautiful sight. Read on...

Kenya means Cross Country

For almost a generation, Cross Country has meant Kenya. Over the last twenty years, Kenyan athletes have won 101 of a possible 186 gold medals awarded in the Men’s, Women’s, and Junior events. The senior men’s team have won 18 of the last 20 gold medals. The junior’s have won 17. A fantastic 54% of ALL GOLD MEDALS have gone to one country: KENYA!

But in all these years, NOT ONE MEDAL has been won on Kenyan soil. Why? Because the races have never been held in Kenya. And how many times have they been held in Africa? Just ONCE!

We Kenyans believe, that we have earned the chance to run in these races before a Kenyan crowd and on Kenyan soil. Read on...

About the Event

The event is annual and consists of races held over two days. The groups and distances run are: Senior men 12km and 4km and Senior women 8km and 4km. Junior men and Junior women have their own categories.

The Host City

The course in Mombasa will be perhaps the most scenic ever. It will be on the cliff tops that Mombasa Island presents to the Indian Ocean: a green carpet laid before the blue of the ocean and all under a topical sun.

Mombasa is a port, a centre of commerce and its palm-fringed, sandy white beaches, caressed by the gentle waves of the Indian Ocean are a favourite place for tourists in search of sun, sand and sea, and comfortable, good hotels. Read on...
